Kickstarter Project Canceled After Dude Spends All the Money

If you were thinking about donating some money to help Spike Lee get back on his feet, maybe think twice: this guy just raised over $120,000 to make a game, and then just walked away with all the money. Contrary to what The Crowd Economy preaches, strangers can still screw you.

Erik Chevalier wanted to make a new nerd-approved board game:
A light hearted Lovecraftian game of urban destruction, for two to four players.

You’re one of the Great Old Ones – beings of ancient and eldritch power. Cosmic forces have held you at bay for untold aeons, but at last the stars are right and your maniacal cult has called you to this benighted place. Once you regain your full powers, you will unleash your Doom upon the world!
Fun. Lots of likeminded tabletop gaming geeks flooded Chevalier with cash, surpassing his $35,000 goal by quite a bit: the final take was $122,874. That's a lot of money to design a board game, but hey, it seemed imaginative, so maybe it'd all be put to use. That was possible until this week, when Chevalier posted an update saying he'd spent all the money, didn't have enough to finish the project, and the whole thing was called off. Oh, and about your money? You're probably fucked:
The short version: The project is over, the game is canceled.

After much deliberation I've had to make this decision. I've informed Keith and Lee and neither at all happy with this situation. Every possible mistake was made, some due to my inexperience in board game publishing, others due to ego conflicts, legal issues and technical complications. No matter the cause though these could all have been avoided by someone more experienced and I apparently was not that person.

From the beginning the intention was to launch a new board game company with the Kickstarted funds, with The Doom that Came to Atlantic City as only our first of hopefully many projects. Everyone involved agreed on this. Since then rifts have formed and every error compounded the growing frustration, causing only more issues. After paying to form the company, for the miniature statues, moving back to Portland, getting software licenses and hiring artists to do things like rule book design and art conforming the money was approaching a point of no return. We had to print at that point or never. Unfortunately that wasn't in the cards for a variety of reasons.
Wait a second, "moving back to Portland"? Why was that part of the project expense? Backers are asking the exact same thing, and don't like the idea that their money for a board game helped a guy move to a new city. Where the hell did all of the rest of the money go? None of the $122,000 is itemized. It's just... gone. There is talk of refunds, but backers shouldn't expect much anytime soon:
Unfortunately I can't give any type of schedule for the repayment as I left my job to do this project and must find work again. I'll create a separate bank account to place anything beyond my basic costs of living.
I've reached out to Kickstarter to clarify just what kind of recourse these screwed gamers have, but it looks like they'll just have to wait to get a refund out of this dude's savings account sometime in the next couple of decades. Or they can sue, which they're already discussing.
Keep all of this in mind before you donate $30 in the hopes that maybe, someday, that cool Kickstarter iPhone dock might become a reality. Or be ready for the person in charge to spend some (or all!) of your money on haircuts, chewing gum, and a trip to Philly.

Si alta recenta:
Well folks, this looks to be dead in the water and Mr Seth Nemec appears to have absconded with $23,000 in donations.

Here's the story best as I can recount it.

Funding for Odin's Ravens ended on March 5th, garnering nearly $23,000. About one week after that, pretty much all traces of Mr Nemec and his project disappeared from the interwebz. He deleted both his personal Facebook page and the Odin's Ravens Facebook page. His accounts on Twitter, Youtube and this site became inactive.

Of course as the time wore on, people tried to contact him through the KS page for status updates on the project. No replies. I managed to hunt down his Google+ account. No reply.

When the company Seth claimed was going to manufacture the product was contacted, they stated "We quoted the project but have not heard back from Seth since early March. The project is not in production at this point (he would need to upload the design files to our FTP site and sign our contract first)."

And, finally, as of today both myself and Charles Rose -- who is probably a bit more active here on the site than myself and, I am quite sure, will corroborate all this if he isn't currently working on a reply at the same time as me -- contacted the artist who was commissioned to do all the artwork for the game. She replied quickly, stating she had, indeed, created all the artwork for Mr Nemec, who had promised to pay her once the campaign was fully funded. Needless to say she saw nary a cent, and has had no interactions with him in the last 3 months.

So, there you have it. Pretty much the nail in the coffin for anybody still holding out hope.

Detestable, really.

Nu este singurul proiect in aceasta situatie. Mai exista 2 proiecte cu probleme similare:

Odin's Ravens

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/wor ... s/comments

Creatorul proiectului a disparut pur si simplu cu peste 22.000 USD.

si Katalyka

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1820893788/katalyka

Just wanted to contact everyone and let you all know what's going on.

It seems like the spiritual collaboration I am working with was able to work out an understanding with the military and some other various groups over the last few weeks, and things are feeling very positive for the future!

All the paper supplies are still safely in a climate controlled storage while I am saving up some money to purchase ink for printing with a different printer than I had budgeted for.

I'm not having troubles with hyperdimensional plasma attacks any more, so the only problem left to resolve is that I had budgeted for using the 4 color laser printer, and it turned out that I have to use an inkjet (for the card decks ONLY) instead, which will cost a bit more than I had budgeted for. But I'm well along the way to having the new ink budget, so once I am back in Washington state, I should be able to print up the decks without any more issues.

Once again thanks for your patience!

Reminder: you are not a customer on Kickstarter. You are a tiny venture capitalist, taking tiny little risks every time you put your money down. Sometimes you win! Or, in cases like this, you lose.

$526,125 down the drain.

Kingdom Builder: Marshland wrote:Hi everyone,

we apologize to all the backers for having to stop the campaign! The reason being the following:

Even though we have the rights to publish "Marshlands" today, we will not have any rights to publish the game after the 30th of June.

Today Donald has made it official in his mail to us that he will not extend the contract for now- maybe willing to offer a new contract at a later date.

According to the contract with Donald, the game has to be published by end of June. Before the campaign started, everything was lined up for publishing the German edition by that time. But for unfortunate circumstances we could no longer hold that date.

We have to stop the campaign at this stage, because we do not want to let it end, collect your money and then having to refund it afterwards. We want to thank you for your support and do apologize once more for the situation.

Sincerely

Queen Games

My bad :P
