Re: Shogun No Katana
Update. Se pare ca problema cu production costs si shipping freights creaza delays in mai multe proiecte.
Konnichiwa!
Dear backers, today’s update is about production situation. Wow, life is a roller coaster indeed!
We were expecting some difficulties, beacause Shogun no Katana is a really complex project, but some others came completely unexpected. Anyway, we are working like mad to fix all of them and to deliver the product you deserve for your warm support. Here you can read all the details.
Premise
First of all, we’d like to take a look at the general situation in boardgames production in the world. As most of you probably already know, in 2021 things have become really hard for publishers, both for production and for logistics. For those who are not informed about this subject, we explained it in this post on our blog, and you can find other publishers speaking about it in this BoardGameGeek News blog post.
Anyway, what’s important to say here is this: we are facing higher production costs than planned and the only way for us to realize the game without any load on you, is to combine all the print runs together. This slowed down the production process, because we needed to finalize flawless graphic files simultaneously for all the versions of the game (Kickstarter Base, Kickstarter Deluxe and 4 different retail versions, + expansion set and stand alone characters), but this is not the worst thing.
Plastic tray troubles
Here’s something we didn’t expect at all: a huge quantity of problems with the plastic tray development. It was one of the first things we worked on, as you can see in our update dated February 15 (!!!), because we knew it was quite complicated (it must easily fit in all versions, which, as you know, have different contents). We took a summer break in the second half of August after confirmation that production was starting. Just a couple of days later, the supplier wrote to us and asked for some changes on the tray. Unfortunately, such changes would lead to change other game elements (of course if a space on the tray must be reduced, we must also reduce the tiles that should go inside that space).
So, we worked on different solutions to keep the same spaces without changing all the cardboard elements, which have been ready for months. At the moment, we are working with our supplier trying out different solutions and we still don't know if they will accept our new solutions or if we’ll have to change cardboard elements (meaning that we'd also have to change all the rulebooks in which they appear).
In short: it's a mess!
We are really disappointed about this issue, but we're on our way to reach the perfect solution.
Shipping
Another delicate matter: as written above, shipping costs really increased in an insane way, this year. Our consultant confirmed that sea freight only cost from China to the USA increased from 1,000$ to 20,000$. At the moment there’s no way to know if the situation will return to more reasonable prices. Our plan is to combine shipments, possibly with our partners’ products, too. This could mean that when the game will be ready, we could need to wait some time before shipping it overseas. Of course, we’ll ship both the Kickstarter and the retail versions together, but when they arrive we’ll immediately fulfill the Kickstarter ones first and we’ll keep the retail in our US and European warehouses until fulfillment will be finished.
In short:
All this is not to give you the feeling we are pessimistic, but we think you deserve to be updated on the situation with complete honesty. At the moment we cannot know exactly when the game will arrive. Miniatures and graphic files are ready, unless we have to change something, and we’ll officially start production as soon as the plastic tray is approved. This means that the game will probably be ready for shipment in December/January. We’ll work and take agreements to organize the logistic part at best, but this will probably require some time. Out of principle we don't intend to ask you for more money for shipment. But of course we can't afford too heavy a loss, so we'll opt for a solution that can safeguard your trust in us, and the high quality of the game (and incidentally our company's future). So we’ll not be able to spend more than necessary to have a faster arrival. We hope you understand.

Re: Shogun No Katana
Dear backers,
In our latest update we told you everything was on track, but obviously the universe has its own plans… As you may know, a new situation arose: China is once again under hard lockdown due to an unprecedented Covid spread in the country! This damn virus is really putting the world to the test once again when we all were hoping to have more or less come to terms with it.
Our Chinese suppliers are facing a terrible moment of stress and fear; last week they wrote to us that they were working from home, only half of the workers were admitted in the factory, with increasingly hard restrictions. But they were hoping to be back to 100% productivity by the following week.
Then a few days ago they wrote something slightly more alarming:
“Hi Mario,
I am afraid I can not tell you the production time now. Because COVID, we are still on lockdown [...] we don't know when we can go back to office now, the situation in Shanghai is much worse than in 2020. [...] we are not allowed to go out.”
Our thoughts go to all of them and we really hope the situation will recover rapidly and all our supplier’s workers and their families are safe and sound.
As for the game, honestly, we can understand you are not happy with this delay but we can assure we feel even worse! We have been working on this game for 3 years and it’s really frustrating to receive bad news when we are so close to the end. We’ll inform you as soon as we have a date.
